CFE has taken a leading role on the issues around the big tech companies and their role in this part of the world. We have submitted two requests for information for them:
The first was a series of questions for four platforms – Google, Meta/Facebook, TikTok and X – about what preparations they have made to prevent disruption of our elections. We argue that this is critical public information that enables the protection of free speech in the run-up to our ballot. You can read our letters in full here: Meta, Google, TikTok and X.
A second series of questions to Google related to the issues being considered by the Competition Commission’s inquiry into the media industry and the tech platforms. You can read our letter in full here, as well as their response and our follow-up with a formal PAIA request.
A fuller explanation of our position on these issues is contained in two op-ed pieces written for Business Day, here and here. We have also done interviews on Radio 702, Cape Talk, Voice of the Cape and SAFM.
