CFE has made details submissions to Parliament on the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill (GILAB), warning that in its current form this Bill is a major threat to free expression and democracy. The Bill, intended to restructure and reform the State Security Agency in the wake of “state capture”, expands dangerously the definition of national security. If this stands, it will allow the SSA scope to interfere in almost every sphere of South African life. It also falls short on oversight and accountability mechanisms.
