Botswana Freedom of Expression Summit

The Botswana Freedom of Expression Summit spoke in one voice against the conduct of the country’s Directorate of Intelligence and State Security (DISS), notorious for illegal surveillance and frequent arrest and harassment of activists. This was one of a number of threats to free expression in the build-up to this year’s election that were highlighted at the two-day gathering in Gaborone, attended by over 100 representatives of civil society, political parties, private and state media and international organisations.
