Malawi: Journalist in hiding as military search for him

Renowned Malawian investigative journalist and editorial director for the Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ), Gregory Gondwe has gone into hiding after being alerted that he is being pursued by the country’s military arm, the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).

This follows the publication’s recent article that exposed that the military for doing business with Zuneth Sattar, a fraud suspect who is being probed by the country’s corruption-busting body, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The article exposes some underhand dealings between the Malawi Defence Force and businessman Sattar who is currently being probed for a number of alleged corrupt deals with government officials and businesspersons.

Civil society organisations and national media body MISA Malawi have urged the Attorney General and MDF leadership to ensure the safety of Gondwe and a free and conducive media operating environment in the country.
