Vacancy: Legal Researcher

The Campaign for Free Expression (CFE) is seeking applications for the position of Legal Researcher.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong legal background, confident in undertaking legal research, strategy development, and drafting in support of CFE-related litigation. The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A deep understanding of free expression and its protection under South Africa’s constitutional and legal framework.
  • Familiarity with South Africa’s media environment and the threats it faces.
  • Insight into the implications—both opportunities and risks—that social media, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence pose for freedom of expression.
  • The ability to conceptualise and coordinate campaigns that advance free speech–related issues.
  • Capacity to prepare and coordinate policy submissions on matters that impact freedom of expression.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to advancing and defending free expression in South Africa and the region.
